HIGHLANDS AND ISLANDS

1250kVA Diesel Generator_BaraProgress Group has successfully supplied, installed and commissioned a containerised 1250 kVA diesel generator on the Scottish Isle of Barra, situated in the Outer Hebrides. The new generator will provide over 1250 kVA of power to the Island and currently operates as a standby application for use when there is an undersea mains supply cable damage or periodic inspection.

Following the generator installation, Progress Group’s control system engineers were faced with the challenge of synchronising the new generator with two pre-existing generators to give a synchronised supply to the island.

Suitable control systems were fitted to each of the three generators with electronic potentiometers for speed and voltage control for use during generator synchronising and load sharing operations.  There were complications since the generating sets were all of different manufacturer and the client wanted to retain all of the existing manual operator controls.  However, having successfully devised a solution, the entire system was enabled to supply the entire island with a synchronised back up supply.

Our team, which included our in house project managers and engineers, managed the project from start to finish including the transportation and offload of all equipment.  Not long after the installation, Barra had a genuine electrical supply failure; the system was called into action and successfully supplied the local inhabitants with power for a number of days until the normal supply was reinstated.
