2 MVA INSTALLED AT Critical Data Centre

Progress Group supplied, installed and commissioned one of the largest generators that FG Wilson produce to a critical data centre in East Midlands.

Critical Data Centre Generator InstallationThe set, a 2200 kVA enclosed within a 40’ sound attenuated container together with a separate 32,000 litre double skin fuel tank, was delivered and craned into position on time and as per the prepared method statement.

It was the culmination of months of meetings and planning and working in conjunction with all other interested parties who were involved in getting the work completed with minimum interruption and disruption to an operating data centre.

The generator is provided to act as back up to the mains supply and support three large UPS units; the large fuel tank will offer at least 72 hours continuous running at full load.

An interesting aspect was that the offload area was directly adjacent to a mainline rail track and since every aspect of the job was subject to detailed risk assessment, even the somewhat unlikely event of the crane toppling onto the track, or the crane driver slewing the load into the face of an oncoming train was discussed, reviewed, risk minimised and a contingency plan put in place.

The generator in its wide container (minus the roof mounted exhausts) was delivered by specialist transport and had to have an escort from Dewsbury to site. The position of the large crane had to be agreed in advance and was marked out in some detail on site drawings beforehand showing that it would just fit with extended outriggers.

Despite all the possible problem areas the whole project went extremely well with the final testing taking place some two weeks later when all power was turned off to the building. To our client's satisafaction, the generator started and took the UPS load first time and every subsequent time thereafter.
