CONTROL SYSTEM UPGRADE

In addition to manufacturing custom built control systems for generators, Progress Group are increasingly called upon to carry out repairs and upgrades to their client's existing equipment.

A recent addition to our company portfolio involved the replacement of an existing control system - comprising of custom-built circuit boards and transducers - on a synchronised pair of 500 kVA generators.

This was brought about because the generators were failing to automatically and manually synchronise: under those conditions in the event of a utility supply failure the non-essential services on site would be left without power as a single generator could only supply power to essential systems.

Following inspection and testing of the control systems and identifying the operational requirements, the way forward entailed replacing all the custom built circuit boards and other components that were not readily available with a dedicated generator control module.

Throughout the project it was imperative that essential systems on site maintained an emergency power supply, as such Progress Group's Control System Engineers were unable to work on both generators simultaneously; a method statement was devised that entailed treating the generators as individual machines.

Subsequently we were able to completely refurbish and test the control system of one generator followed by swapping the generators over to enable the same procedure to be repeated on the second generator.

These works were successfully carried out without compromising the client's emergency power supplies and within the specified time frame.
