400 Series... keeping it cool

Ice Cream Van GeneratorWe have recently supplied and installed several FG Wilson 18 kVA open generating sets into mobile ice cream vehicles to ensure the fleet keeps operating around Scotland.

Despite being small in size the generating sets had to be modified slightly to fit inside the dedicated and purpose built compartment at the rear of the vehicle.

The ice cream company had two main product requirements - ease of maintenance and low noise level.

The set mounted control panel was removed and a remote keystart unit was fitted within ice the cream vehicle to allow the generating set to be stopped and started easily while in operation. In this case a Deep Sea 402F module keystart unit was used as an easy interface with the generating set.

It was imperative that the generating set had a low noise level, as in the past the vehicle operator found it difficult to hear when serving customers.

In previous applications the air discharge from the radiator end had been horizontal and at the side of the vehicle where customers were being served. In this case, Progress Group designed the arrangement to allow the air discharge to flow downwards through an opening on the floor and positioned at the offside of the ice cream vehicle. In addition, the exhuast was also designed to face to the offside of the vehicles, mineral wool slabs and perforatd steel was fitted within the purpose built compartment for the generating set.

All of these featured, designed by Progress Group, reduced the noise level of the generating set considerably.

These Ice Cream vehicles. fitted with FG Wilson generating sets, can be found at a number of tourist attractions around Scotland.
